Coordinated Homeless Intake & Access (CHIA) is the centralized entry point to the homeless services for households who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in the City of Lynchburg and the surrounding counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell County. CHIA works through the Lynchburg Redevelopment and Housing Authority during regular business hours Monday through Friday where the functions can be done in person or over the phone. On weekends and during night hours, Lynchburg Community Action Group provides after-hours CHIA services through the same phone number.

To ensure fair and equal access, standardized assessments are used as part of the coordinated entry process. The CHIA coordinator first attempts to divert every household from entering the homeless response system through the use of the CVCoC Safety and Diversion Screen. Household who will be homeless that night and are unable to be diverted will be referred to an emergency shelter based on shelter bed availability. Households who are in imminent risk of becoming homeless and are unable to be diverted will be referred to prevention services for targeted assistance.
